The stands were extended in 1958, expanding its capacity to 38,000. 5,658 seats were added in the west end zone in 1960, and its capacity expanded to 43,568. The "WestZone" project is a two-phase project involving the renovation of the locker rooms and adding team offices and training facilities. Phase 1, in 2004-2006, involved the enclosing of the west stands and adding luxury boxes and club seating. There was also a Phase 2 in 2009.

The stadium's nickname stems from the fact that the field is situated on a valley. at the east side of the stadium is a hill in which players run down before their games are played, and on the top of the hill is "Howard's Rock". The current capacity of the stadium is 81,500.

The NFL's Carolina Panthers played the 1995 season in the stadium.
