Probably one of the most successful little mines in the Forest of Dean.Monument Mine was started by the near to legendary Freeminer Gerald Haynes who developed and ran the mine more or less single handed for almost 30 years. Monument is now owned by Ray Ashley and his partners and despite a few small breaks has been in more or less continuous production for many years now.Coal is won from the 'Yorkley' seam which is almost 3 feet thick and of excellent quality. The mine is also relatively 'dry'and forecasts of the reserves seem to indicate there are at least 30 years of coal left.
