The town originated as housing for construction workers who were building nearby Bonneville Dam. In the 1970s, with construction of the northern powerhouse, the original townsite was submerged, and the community was moved to its present location. The portions of the town on the north side of the railroad tracks were undisturbed, and are the only portion of town that is original.
North Bonneville is one of two incorporated cities in Skamania County, the other being Stevenson.
