In the first week of February, 1948 the enemy had attacked in substantial strength, at Naushera in J&K. Although, the 50 Para Brigade had evicted the enemy from the surrounding heights, the Tangdhar feature had to be tackled.

About a month later, on 18th March 1948, a 4 Dogra advance from Naushera to Rajauri encountered, severe obstacles due to road blocks and mine fields. Even armour could not penetrate. 2nd Lieutenant Ram Raghoba Rane of the 37 Assault Field company and his men, cleared the forward passage with sheer grit and determination. He worked through nights, under enemy mortar fire and moved forward. It cost the enemy 500 dead and several wounded.

Rane was decorated with the PVC (ParamVeer Chakra) for his endeavour without which the Army column could not have reached the vantage point of Chingas.
