  • The wartime sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff during World War II, with an estimated loss of about 9,300 people in 1945 remains the greatest maritime disaster ever. The sinking of the German Cruise Liner Wilhelm Gustloff, during the Second World War was actually the greatest maritime disaster ever. She was evacuating German Civilians and Military staff from Poland when she was torpedoed and sunk in the Baltic. The greatest peacetime maritime disaster occured on December 20, 1987 with the sinking of the Phillipino passenger ferry MV Dona Paz following a collision with an oil tanker. An estimated 4,386 lives were lost. The sinking of the Titanic in 1912, with the loss of 1,523 lives remains the most enduring maritime disaster, nonetheless.
