PPL Montour generating station

USA / Pennsylvania / Washingtonville /
 power station, coal-fired

Owner/Operator : PPL Gen LLC.

The Montour Steam Electric Station, located about a mile northeast of Washingtonville, Pennsylvania, is a coal fired two unit plant with a combined output of 1,525 megawatts. Originally built in the 1970’s it has been modernized several times with the most recent being in 2000. Replacement of plant equipment and instrumentation not only improved the plant economics, but helped reduce particulates and gaseous emissions.

Montour plant has two coal-fired, steam-electric generation units. Unit 1 began commercial operation in 1972; Unit 2 came on line the following year. Each unit has about 762 megawatts of generating capacity. The plant also has a 15-megawatt auxiliary unit for a total of about 1,540 megawatts of generating capacity. The plant has about 250 employees (current full-time workers; figure varies by seasonal workload) and is owned by a subsidiary of PPL Generation.
