In the mid 14th century in the bay of Symbols (greek: Symbolon limne) Genoese merchants have founded the Cembalo castle (the name derives from greek Symbolon). In 1475 Cembalo was taken by the Ottoman Turks who renamed it into Baliq-Uve (Balaqlava). The name means a fish nest. It became known for the fact that it was a place where sacked khans of the Crimean Khanate were sent.
