Transferred by Manuel Cadenas in 1921 To American Sugar Refining Company, subject to a side agreement concerning future access to mainland, for possible commercial activity connected with sugar operations in the Jaronu sugar mills. American Sugar was unable to construct land bridge, but Cuban government chose a similar route in 1990s for a "pedraplen" - a land brige as designed by Manuel Cadenas in the 1920s. The Cuban design did not have adequate breaks for water flow as was contemplated in the Cadenas design. Versailles is one of several locales featured in the Hemingway novel Islands in the Stream.
