Basra International Hotel (Basra)

Iraq / al-Basrah / Basra

www.basrahinternationalhotel.com/

Opened in 1981 as the Basrah Sheraton Hotel & Casino. The American chain severed their contract with the government-owned hotel during the 1991 Gulf War. The hotel continued to use the name, without permission, for nearly twenty years until it closed after the Iraq War. It was renovated and reopened in 2010 under its current name.

Located in the center of Basrah, the hotel's design concept draws upon traditional khan buildings for inspiration. The five-storey building incorporates two principle courts around which all of the guest rooms and public facilities are located. The architecture attempts to blend Islamic and Mesopotamian influences with landscape elements and water. The structure is of reinforced concrete construction. Arched beams, which support the floors, span directly between the load-bearing exterior and courtyard walls.
