Casa Cipriani Hotel (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / South Street, 10
ferry terminal, movie / film / TV location, historic landmark

140,000-square-foot Beaux-Arts landmark building completed in 1909 as the Battery Maritime Building. Designed by Walker & Morris when ferries were still a vital means of transportation in New York City, its many unique architectural assets include nearly 8,800 elements of cast-iron, riveted rolled steel plates and angles, sheet copper ornamentation, colorful ceramic tile by Guastavino Fireproof Tile Co. and stucco paneled walls, and a copper panel mansard roof system.

It was originally used for excursion trips, and since 1956, has served as the ferry terminal to Governors Island, when the U.S. Army began use of the terminal to provide service to an Army post, Fort Jay on Governors Island. When the United States Coast Guard took over Governors Island from the Army in 1966, they continued to use the terminal to provide vehicle and passenger service to the island for its 3000 residents and 2000 daily commuters until its departure in 1996. Between 2001 and 2005, in a 36 million dollar renovation, the exterior of the building and its deteriorating wooden piers were restored and its exterior repainted in its original multiple color scheme by Jan Hird Pokorny Architects. During the summer season, public ferry service to Governors Island continues from the Battery Maritime Building, operated by the Trust for Governors Island, an agency for the City of New York, since 2003. The building has three slips.

It has been turned into a 47-room hotel by Cipriani S.A. with Centaur Properties and Midtown Equities. The former waiting hall was turned into an event space. The waiting hall was used as a filming location for S3E3 of the HBO original series "Succession" as the site of a gala.
