Koregaon Pillar is erected in 1851 to commemorate glorious "Battle of Koregaon (Defense of Koregaon)".
As mentioned in "A HISTORY OF THE MAHRATTAS VOL III" written by JAMES GRANT DUFF. -
This battle fought on 1st January 1818. A small British force of less than 1,000 men under Captain Staunton defended Korygaom (Koregaon) against attack of around 25,000 Peshwas troops under the Peshwa BajiRao 2nd. The British held their ground entire day, and Peshwa retreat in the night on the information of approaching reinforcements under General Smith. Peshwas loss of 600 against 275 men lost on British side. This 2nd battalion, 1st regiment corps was later made Grenadiers.
