Woolworths Holdings Limited is a South African chain of retail stores and one of the largest in the country. The first Woolworths store opened in the old Royal Hotel in Cape Town in October 1931. It was founded by Max Sonnenberg assisted by his son Richard and Fred Kossuth, then 22 and an “office boy” and later a leader of the company.

Woolworths now incorporates a series of food stores, some of which are attached to retail stores, while others stand alone or are attached to petrol stations. Woolworths goods are sold at 149 corporate stores, 51 international franchise stores throughout the rest of Africa and the Middle East and 69 South African franchise stores nationwide.

The chain is not related to the United States chain F. W. Woolworth Company.

  • 08 June 2009 Human Resource Department Woolworths Head Office Cape Town 8001 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Dear Sir/madam I am writing this letter in recommendation of Ernest (second name unknown), who is currently a security guard at your Vangate Mall Branch. I have reason to believe that he has previously made application to your head-office for employment and has still not received any reply. Personally I believe he has all the relevant Customer Service Skills required and more and that he would make any branch of Woolworths proud to have him as an employee. Not only is he patient, polite and courteous, but he is also very knowledgeable with regards Woolworths products and knows his way around the store. I strongly urge you to employ him and gain a true asset to your company. Yours sincerely MRS J HEBER
  • It is interesting to see that I am not the only dissatisfied customer that Woolworths has. I lodged a complaint about the bad service I received at the Tygervalley branch a week ago and all that I have received is an acknowledgement of receipt and an e-mail requesting my telephone number. After a week of waiting there has been no further response. It seems as if Woolworths are just not interested in dealing with problems.
  • Good day, i am writing this cooment out of serious concern. Your store manager of the Hilton store in KZN, Lyle Conway, is in the process of recruiting his boyfriend Ashley Campbell Goodwin to work in his store or elsewhere in your group. This is most unfair to other job seekers who do not have the contact of a store manager to arrange empployment. What is Woolworths policy on employing spouses and partners?
  • Since i report my lost card last october, i was told to collect it at my nearest ww store, up until now i didn't receive it , the account is almost finished.
  • Service in Savvanah Mall Polokwane sucks!
  • I am suzan since i applied for credit card last year at kwagga mall the credit went okay but they never activated the card now woolies credit card said i owe them R53:06 but the card never activeted even now.

  • It is disgusting that Woolworths disregard the Biggest christian Symbolic Celebration & have chose to have HOT CROSS BUNS with Hallal stickers on them. How can our Christian Religious remeberance day be tainted by this LOGO.???
  • This is to the comment that Gavin Snyman made above!! If you know your Christian Religion then surly you should know that HOT CROSS BUNS has nothing to do with religion christian/hallal, so who cares what sticker is on them.
  • To Elzette it may mean nothing to you, but it means alot to us, the Cross is and was traditionally a symbol on the bun for our faith during this time, its no different to The Star of David during Pessach and the Star and moon to the Muslims during Eid. Go out and buy the bun its your perogative, but please respect ours
  • Changed my adress 2 times, still not changed. Get a phone call that they received the last payment in Jan 12 which is not true, i did payments R200 Feb and R200 March. I faxed the Bankstatements 2 times and went to bay side Mall with the statements as well and the Girl there promissed me that this will be sorted out asap and again faxed the Bankstatements to Head office. Yesterday I went shopping in Canal Walk and had things at WW for R500. At the till they told me I cant buy because I have not payed for 2 months. Again I told the story and they phoned head office. After 45min of talking with a man at head office I still get nowhere. I couldnt buy and Woolworths lost the sale. Why are the R400 stil not reflecting on my account? I left him my Card and told him to make sure he cancell my card. How many times do I have to change my adress and its still not done and how many times they need to see my bankstatements? i was even in Bay side Mall with the Bankstatements and after promisses that this will be fixed its still not done and I cant buy anything. Besides the point that I was embarressed infront of a whole lot people behind me in the Queue.
  • My name is Josephine Saayman,I am 61 years old a State Pensioner, and at the moment I am fighting the dreaded "C"....I love Woollies, but sadly I can't afford to shop there on my State Pension.....What I want to say is for the past 11 years I have being buying my pickled fish from Woollies, and have loved it.....Yesterday I went down to Woolworths in Bayside Centre table View, and i saw they had 2 pickled fish for R60....so I took 2....when I got home I had some, and really found it extremely strong....I battled to eat it....in all the years that I am buying my pickled fish at Woolworths I have never had it so strong.....there are lots of people that loce strong food.....I don't,as I like to taste what I am eating, and not have a burning mouth....This is not a complaint,I am just letting Woolworths know my opinion....I also just wish that Woolworths would be so kind as to BLESS me with a voucher,so that I can get some foods at Woolworths that I need to eat now that I am fighting cancer....Thanking you in advance, and hope to hear from Woolworths soon....BLESSINGS.....
  • Good day I love Woolies, but your branch at Lephalale/Ellisras is NOT nice! I can't complain about the service - because there is NONE! The rack with the denims on - horrible, unneat. To make a copy from the lady in front of me's slip, took more than ten minutes. There was only ONE lady helping, the others were chatting with other staff members, ignoring us! No no this is a NO NO for your shop! I hope you will look into the matter, because I think you can do much better here. Everybody shop in Pretoria because they either don't get what they were looking for in Ellisras or maybe it is because of the poor service. Kind Regards Ida
  • Hi i bought a pair of studio w leather boots from you store on 27 april 2012. I wore the boots just once for 3 hrs max and my feet were burning and had blisters on them. I approached your store in cavendish who told me to bring them in because they need to be tested !!! And the turn around time would be anything from 2 to 3 weeks the contact i spoke to was Claudia at cavendish. My concern is that a pair of boots at that value should not do that to my feet!!! Also i paid cash for those boots and didnt purchase them on my account.I cannot wear those boots they are uncomfortable and the burning it causes to my feet is unacceptable. I need some feedback soonest on that boots since you are Woolworths and u aim at making the difference.ps i dont hav problem feet never had its ur boots that will create problem feet for me if i continue wearing them. please make contact with me soonest because R999.00 is alot of money too spend on shoes that you not getting any joy from.
  • Thanks Woolworths- just received my Wrewards magazine today(2 May) Yippee, I'm a VIP customer and am being rewarded with WReward vouchers!! Only thing is they are dated 16 March to 13 May validity. That gives me 10 days to fly off to Woolies and shop. No wonder you state "be sure to check the expiry date on your WRewards voucher" Sneaky one Woolworths.
  • Hi received a scarf from Woolworths for my birthday the other day. I seldom buy cloths at Woolworths because it is not interesting enough. But this scarf is beautiful and I thought I must go there more often!! To my surprise I see that a lot of cloths are "made in China", including my scarf. This is really dissapointing. I thought Woolworths is PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN and that we must buy at Woolworths because the quality is so different and that is what they pride is. But what makes them different now? I can rather go to a China shop behind every corner and clothes there for cheaper. In the past you bought more expensive clothes to get better quality, but now if I buy at Woolworths that is more expensive than Mr.Price for instance I am not convinced that Woolworths have better quality because most of the stuff is made in China anyway. Would love to have feedback from them!
  • My account had been opened 15/07/2006 R5500.00 with woolworths and paid up in full and account closed14/08/2006. I have since not been able to apply for credit as it was declined due to me being listed on ITC. when enquiring it was found that Woolworths had listed me. I phoned the legal department last year numerous times after I received my credit report from Trans-union to resolve and clear my name . it was confirmed with me that the account had been paid in full and closed and that my name will be cleared 28 November 2011 as they don't know what happened. this has not been done and still I am listed! I have also recently learned when applying through ABSA for credit that I am 1 month in arrear with payment and that an amount of R35.00 is outstanding. I am utterly concerned and disappointed as I thought this issue would have been resolved by now. the account was paid in full 6 years ago but for some reason listed. I closed the account and even had to write a letter they took my card and cut it in peaces in store. What is going on here??? how long will it go on or have I been branded for life???
  • AS I READ THIS I THINK I MUST CLOSE MY ACOUNT
  • i wrote this letter to you ijust want to know that i openend an account a long time ago and woolworths used both my surnames but i was paying for one accountand after that you send me an authony letter it was years ago whilst i was still woking on a farm. so i want to if am i still blacklisted
  • Your receiving staff and managers at woolworths eastgate are up to no good,if they don't take lunch when there is a dellivery then they stand around an talking bullshit withe eash other.I'm tired of waiting 4 to 5 hours just to get received.if this is gona be a problem at eastgate then I think I may get better satisfaction at the media.thanx
  • Rtv stock been dispatched and pusshed out without awareness by managers suppliers and staff.at the end we as suppliers must pay for stolen stock.will go to the authoroties if not sorted
  • Irecentley purchased in your Cowey Rd Food store in Morningside Durban. While I was waiting to go to pay at the till a lady bumped me and stole my phone from my bag. Date 15/06 Purchased R686.54 Till 6. When I discovered my Iphone4S phone had been stolen went back to the store - the manager was very helpful viewing the security camera footage and saw the suspect. She said she would advise the police who visited the store daily. I'm a really loyal customer however I'm deeply upset and concerned regarding this incident. I have a woollworths account and purchase at least 3 times a week in your stores.
  • the best store mananger in vaal, div 1 Stacey in 374, showing us a way for success in woolies and always advising us to archive more, best 1 evr. and presure is our cup of coffee, she just makes it easy, but hate the place when she is not around, the place feels like hell, line managers show their true coloures, they sometimes lead us to a point of thinking about quiting and sell their souls for my success, they built evil in us, i wish they could change b4 it gets worse, woolies isthe best company to work for and style, quality, innovation and intergrity must be deliverd at all times. love my work and i'm grateful to be a family of woolies. god bless
  • I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHY YOU DON'T WANT TO REMOVE MY NAME FROM ITC AS I'M FINISH TO PAY MY ACCOUNT. AND THE REASON WHY I DIDN'T PAY IS THAT I WAS SICK FOR LONG TIME. PLEASE PHONE YOUR LAUYERS WHERE YOU HANDED OVER MY NAME TO CLEAR IT.IAM SO UPSET WHEN SOMEONE SAY MY NAME IT WILL STAY ON ITC FOR 2YEARS.REMOVE MY NAME I'M NOT OWING ANYMORE.
  • I'm absolutely disgusted with Woolworths, will make sure I run a campaign against them until the day I die. My daughter is sitting in South Africa with no food. I'm overseas, I've been trying desperately just to buy her a voucher or some food on line, but they will NOT deliver today, nor will they allow her to go to her nearest store and fetch the voucher or the food. YOU ARE SHOCKING, I will never buy at Woolworths again, and when I get back I shall run a concerted protest campaign outside each of your stores.
  • Woolworth in Constantia and Cavendish are our stores of choice as your quality is usual of a very high standard. I must however point out that the Herb & Lemon Chicken portions which we had for supper this evening 9/09/13 had not been bled properly and the drumstick bones were black as were the thigh bones. Very disappointed as it put me right off my meal. The supplier is obviously scoring but at both your and our expense, yours because we will not purchase the marinated portions again. We have never experienced this with your whole free range chickens.
  • Hi. I was recently on holiday in Johannesburg and went to your Eastrand Mall branch to buy a desert for that day. To my surprise after dinner that night, I slid off the casing to put the chocolate pudding into the microwave, unfortunately it was already opened and half eaten!!! I have a pic that I took, as well as the receipt and the barcode...I'm horrified that the standards have dropped and if this is not sorted soon, I will go to the papers because this is totally unacceptable! R50 is a lot of money to literally throw away!!!
  • Woolworths Sandton City is a shambles. I had to call 5 times to try get information on an item in stock, still no answer. Jabulani, the Manager is now trying to get hold of this item after his staff clearly need to be at home chatting with their friends as they don't need a job. Client service seems to be run by the staff that continually puts the phone down as they don't want to be at work. They don't seem to be away that as customers we are actually paying their wages.
  • To whom it may concern Shopping at Woolworths has always been a very positive experience for me, I was very excited to watch the "new improved" Woolworths going up in Lonehill, where I live. What a disappointment this has been! It is all very well putting in an amazing upgrade, but the staff and management are letting you down in every aspect. They are the laziest, grumpy faced lot that I have ever seen. Some, but not all inclusive are some of my sad experiences and observations: No Erdinger non alcoholic beer for 4 months. I have been to their service kiosk, where there are always an abundance of staff just chatting and on their cell phones, and asked about their lack of stock. They simply tell me to write it up in their book with my contact details and that they will get back to me, no surprises, never ever had any feedback. There are always empty and messy taste stations, never filled up again or cleared away. Yesterday I went in at 9am, and there was no coke zero on the shelf. I was in again at 6pm and still no coke zero. I went again to the kiosk and asked why there was none on the shelf, and was simply told that they hadn't noticed, but could get from the back - hadn't noticed for a whole day, and there were 4 of them hanging over the service kiosk? Worrying! The fresh bread/ roast chicken counter is the most unfiendly and unpleasant experience. What an effort for them to stop chatting with their backs to you, and get served. The tellers simply sit at their empty tills, and eventually will press their bell to call you, it looks like such an effort. The only positive staff are at the fish counter where there is a male and female server who are pleasant and a pleasure to deal with. My recommendation would be to get rid of everyone in any supervisory or management position, and get in a team of tough vigilantes to get that store on track. What a disappointment for such a long awaited " new Woolworths". Regards Cecily West Sent from my iPad
  • Very disappointed! Poor service from Woolworths florist. I paid and made my order for 2 days later.... Woolworths asked for special request: I said contact the recipient to confirm delievery! Then AFTER the delivery time - Woolworths Andiswe Tsotso replied to me saying they could not deliver and that I should phone them!? I did reply to him only to be given an "out of office" reply for 2 weeks hence!!!! Really? Is this the service Woolworths has a reputation for? now 2 days LATER... (thank god it was a special date!!!) still no news... Will post if Andiswe follows up after his holiday!!? POOR SERVICE!
  • I lodged a complaint though the web site complaining about stock that was rotten n the shelves but have had no response, 48 hours later. I even took photos to show them, but just like the manager on duty, it seems like no one cares!!!
  • Woolworths QUOTES: "We're a passionate South African retailer dedicated to bringing you quality, style & value for the last 80 ..." This quote is outdated - unfortunately. Woolworths is not what it used to be......... Friendly staff assistance is not what it used to be.... Now it looks like even the product is not what it used to be... I bought Woolworths pantihose from Woolworths Brooklyn in Pretoria yesterday. 4 boxes. Supposed to have three pantihose in every box. Not the case. Who steals one from a box (easy to open and steal I might add) and the unsuspecting customer still pays for three? Hey, we live in South Africa where theft has become common place (petty or not). Time to wake up Woolworths! Please secure your products' packaging in such way that a customer can recognize any tampering with the content. I refuse to subsidize the stock shrinkage of any store. I refuse to fund this kind of petty theft. I refuse to take up the responsibility of Woolworths to assure product quality AND quantity.
  • Do not bother asking the Woolworths manager in Rivonia, Sandton to help you with anything i.e. not even returning smelly fish that you bought on the same day. The staff have the same 'GO TO HELL' attitude. He will find some stupid excuse and never ever takes back any product, even on the proof of having purchased the smelly fish an hour ago. He has done this many, many times. The customer is always wrong. His security stopped only me at the door on my way out of the shop, so be sure to keep your purchase slip. The quality at Woolworths is shocking. My nanny bought underpants that did not last and I bought socks that did not last. I give the shopping at Woolworths 0 out of 10.
  • Monday 16th of Dec, I returned an item to Customer Services at Bayside Mall. The lady put through the transaction but a few minutes later my sms notification showed the amount had been taken off my account instead of being refunded. I questioned her and she said that I was incorrect and would have to go to the bank and ask for a statement and bring back to show her. My balance is now R360 lower than it should be because R180 has been taken off twice (once with the purchase and once with the "refund") My bank is saying that I have to wait for Woolworths to process their side before I can see the transaction being reflected. I now have to wait another day to sort this mistake out. How can a refund be deducted from my bank balance? I cannot understand why Woolworths could not have just given me the cash and avoided all this hassle. I am still working and have to now take time to go to the bank again. Sometimes being a woolworths customer just makes me see red.
  • Sir Or Madam I live in Milnerton and do my shopping at Woolworth Paddock I have been unable to get the lightly smoked trout lately and I spoke to the manager, he told me it all goes to the larger stores and he is way down on the list’s I would appreciate if your supplier get some to the store in , it is ridicules I have to drive all the way to sea point to get the trout. Thank you Joseph Theeboom

  • the revolving door at Access Park in P.E. is not set to accommodate slower moving customers. My back and neck are very painful from being knocked around inside the door and my trolley laden with purchases knocked off balance. according to management it is not faulty and I must have tried to walk through it incorrectly.
  • Woolworths Head Office could not care about what their loyal customers want. I wrote a letter to the food buyer, handed it in at my local store as they NEVER reply to emails. Well guess what no reply!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is disgraceful for a high end store to think they are too important to reply to customer complaints, requests or anything else.
  • Mrs E Olivier (guest) I have submitted a disapproval form and attached Hospital admittance , I have not bought on account as I was in hospital, if you go into my card details you will see that I always pay cash, it is now months and although I contact your accounts dept . • I purchased underpants in a sealed pack on Saturday at Canal Walk for my husband. .He returned them to Bayside today and was advised that they do not exchange underwear. I can understand the policy when one is buying loose underwear but when the pack is sealed and obviously has not been opened I have a problem with such archaic regulations. It is bad enough that Woolworths store in Bayside does not open on time. Has a customer service policy that sucks and as for finding a staff member. Well all I can say is good luck!
  • There's a long list of thousands of ex customers countrywide. I strongly suspect their 'growth' figures are artificially inflated - just a case of selling less units at way higher prices per unit. They stock exactly the same s**t that you can find in any working class area's main road - all junk 'made in China'. I've long since stopped buying clothes, but just made a mistake of buying shoes, after a 5 yr boycott on their products. Needless to say, they lasted all of a week before the soles began coming away.
  • I am most disgusted with you online shopping service!!! My son ordered flowers for me for Mother's Day. A rude woman called saying she was outside my house with flowers. I asked her to drop it at my sister's place less than 1 minute from my house. She was so rude and said she had no time because she had many deliveries in the White area!! Is Woolworths racist??? I'm in shock! Today she calls and says shes' outside my house!!! I'm working one hour away!! I don't want a week old flower!! You sicken me! And no one bothers to call me to apologise from your online shopping service. This rude woman, Shireen, rocks up at my door today and calls me : I’m at your home but nobody is at home!!!! In AN angry tone! What does she expect – I didn’t even know she was going to come home today but in any case, I am working one hour away! Where is it my fault when your branch has no brains to phone someone to ask where and when to deliver their rotten, 3 day old stale flowers!! Besides, I don’t want rotten flowers which were supposed to have been delivered on Mother’s Day. What am I going to do with a bunch of wilted, smelly flowers??? Please someone call me urgently as I’m very angry with your service and how you are robbing my son or so much money, making false promises which you cannot keep!!!
