Ura e Brarit - Brari's Old Bridge

Albania / Tirana /
cultural heritage / national heritage, interesting place, bridge

"Ura e Brarit", as known in Albanian language, is the Old Ottoman Bridge on the banks of River Tirana. It is an arch bridge thought to have been built 350 years ago, as a charity gift for the villagers, by one of three Muslim sisters. The bridge is still used by villagers to cross over the river.
What is interesting is that the stones of the arch has been laid by mixing white sand with beaten eggs to make it stronger and everlasting. It has also been verified to have been built on the ruins of the Old Roman Bridge (remains of this Roman Bridge can be seen even today on the foundation of the actual bridge).

  • Well, you may wish to delete it, but this is the story told by our forefathers. What I have said is also documented in Albanian National Geographic Archives. This bridge is also protected by the law on cultural objects. I have tried to describe it as clear as possible.
