The company formerly known as Caltex in South Africa is now known by its 'new' name elsewhere 'Texaco', this refinery was built in the late seventies by the aparthied govt to refine crude oil and store it, if you zoom down you will see the secure storage fascilities.
The plant is however a source of much pollution for the local schools, children in this area have a statistically higher chance of getting asthma and chest infection if living in a particular area of Cape Town called Table View, this suburb started life as a farm and a local refuse dump. The council in this area forms part of the metro city council and a few years ago shut the dump, sold the land and has built houses on the old dumpsite.
It is also home to Africa's oldest race track Killarney, so named after the area of teh same name in the UK.
In 1963, the company started construction of a crude oil refinery in Milnerton, Cape Town, and this came on stream in the middle of 1966. The refinery has gone through a number of upgrades and modifications since then, adding new plants and further sophistication in response to market demands. The refinery produces fuel for the company’s own marketing requirements, and product to sell to, and exchange with, other South African oil companies
