tower, 13th century construction
The Martin Tower was built by King Henry III between 1238-1272. Martin Tower was to be used as a prison. It was also used to store the Crown Jewels between 1669 and 1841 when it was referred to as the Jewel Tower, as the Crown Jewels were displayed here for 200 years. Today, it houses the 'Crowns and Diamonds' exhibition based on the making of the Crown Jewels. Colonel Thomas Blood and his men tried to steal the Crown Jewels from the Martin Tower in 1671.
