tower, 13th century construction
Lanthorn Tower is the second largest tower. It was constructed between 1238 and 1272 by King Henry III and was then connected to Wakefield Tower. The name of the tower comes from its use as a marker to nearby ships along the Thames via a lantern that was lit here each night in the top turret. The original tower was destroyed by a fire in 1774 and rebuilt in 1851.
