Built above the original Renton Coal Mine in the early 1900s, this neighborhood is one of Renton's oldest, yet it's difficult to find, owing to its separation from the rest of Renton by I-405 and other barriers. With a mix of structures ranging from tiny miners' cottages to massive mansions of the nouveau riche, Renton Hill has spectacular views of Lake Washington and the distant skyscrapers of Seattle. Few trees impede the views, as nearly every old-growth tree was logged to provide timbers for shoring up the shafts of the coal mine. The entrance of the mine now lies under I-405 at the base of the hill, its shaft filled with tons of rock and concrete.
