dump, pollution, invisible
In the new ocean floor topography images, one can now clearly see the area in the mid-Long Island Sound which has been long used as a dumpsite; first for municipal (and on several occasions medical) waste and most recently dredged materials.
While the dumping of general garbage has been banned in the near-shore waters of the US mainland for many years, the dumping of mud and silt from nearby harbors has in many cases done more damage than garbage ever could. The sludge from these harbors often contains toxic heavy metals, PCB's and hydrocarbons which poison fish, shellfish and aquatic bird species which live in and around Long Island Sound.
