Wreck of SS President Taylor (1942)

Kiribati / Phoenix Islands / Pyramid Point /
Second World War 1939-1945, military, shipwreck, interesting place

Enroute from San Francisco to the Philippines via Pearl Harbor with over 1000 US Army troops embarked, the SS President Taylor (formerly SS President Polk), ran aground at 1820hrs on February 14th, 1942 some 270 yards from Musick Light while attempting to anchor close to shore.

All efforts to free the ship with her own engines failed, as did efforts involving a full salvage team from the Submarine Tender USS Argonne (AS-10) and towing efforts from the Minesweeper USS Breese (DM-18). Declared wrecked, her passengers disembarked and the ship was stripped of reusable materials and abandoned. Remaining firmly ashore in her sad state through the war, the President Taylor was finally sold for scrap in 1952 and by 1954 everything above the waterline had been removed.
