Kanton Island. Atoll belonging to the Republic of Kiribati. Part of the Phoenix Islands. Population 41 as of 2005. Used as refueling point for Pan American Clipper flying boats late 1930s-early 1940s. Canton Island (also known as Kanton Island or Abariringa Island), alternatively Mary Island, Mary Balcout Island or Swallow Island, is the largest, most northern, and, as of 2005, the sole inhabited island of the Phoenix Islands, Republic of Kiribati. In May 2010 the population was reportedly 24, with 14 adults and 10 children.
