In the earlier parts of the 20th century Foy & Gibson was the largest apparel manufacturer in Melbourne. This warehouse complex was built over a number of years around 1900. Raw materials were brought up the yarra (about 1km to the East); and processed up and down the rows of factories; before finally being transferred through underground tunnels into their shops on Smith Street (immediately to the West).
