Collingwood (Greater Melbourne)

Australia / Victoria / Melbourne / Greater Melbourne

Collingwood is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 3 km north-east from Melbourne's central business district. Its Local Government Area is the City of Yarra. At the 2006 Census, Collingwood had a population of 5494.

Collingwood is one of the oldest suburbs in Melbourne and is bordered by Smith St, Alexandra Parade, Hoddle St. and Victoria Parade. The suburb is named after Baron Collingwood, a famous British admiral.

Collingwood is notable for its historical buildings, with many 19th century dwellings, shops and factories still in use.

Australian author Frank Hardy set the novel Power Without Glory in a fictionalised version of the suburb, named Carringbush. The name is also used by a number of businesses in the area, such as "Carringbush Business Centre". At one time a ward in the City of Yarra that includes part of Collingwood was actually named Carringbush.

  • Everyone in Collingwood is a drug addict
  • GOOD
  • Go the Pies!!!
  • I hate this place. It is full of drug.
  • Collingwood is one of the few remaining parts of Melbourne that retains the spirit and character that made Melbourne unique. A true melting pot on the fringes of town, Collingwood sees people from every walk and station of life living and letting live - from the new wave of well-paid executive bohemians through the immigrant aged to the part-time street dwellers and yes right through to a smattering the druggies. Each forms a layer of the Smith St. tapestry - each a mini-society living side by side and seemingly each respecting the right of the other to share the space. If you hate this place, go and stay in the suburbs where everything is the same, every day, for the rest of your life. Live through your TV and interact with your community in a shopping mall where nobody would ever to think to say "G'day mate.. Having a good day?"
  • Collingwood is horrible. Between 1958 and 2003 they won only two Grand Final flags Saverio Rocca and Peter Daicos were phenomenal players but the Magpies lost in 1960,1964,1966,1970,1977,1979,1980,1981,2002,2003. It's been 20 years since we won the premiership and we have 30 more to go.
