The „Alte Kirche", which was originally Catholic, is the oldest place of worship in the city centre. Dedicated at the time to St. Dionysius, it owes its present use as a Protestant place of worship to the preference of Count Hermann von Moers for the Reformation movement. The Catholic community then built the St. Dionysius Church as the main parish church in the immediate vicinity of the „Alte Kirche".
