Shebeen gone but drink flows for proprietor

"The bar is gone, but the drink rolls on." Those were the words from Francis Kelly, proprietor of the country's most famous shebeen which has at last shut its doors after a prolonged battle with gardai and Limerick City Council.
The controversial shebeen had been in operation since early last year and was raided by gardai on several occasions. It was fitted with a working bar, a pool table, a dart board, satellite TV, a poker machine and even a piano.
A self-confessed alcoholic who admits to being barred from every pub in Limerick, Kelly has strongly contended that he was doing nothing wrong by purchasing drink at his local off-licence and consuming it with friends in his family's property.
"I'll always drink in my own home unless they lock me up from it, but I will always drink in my own home and I am going up there now for a drink."
