Nickname applied to this region of Kahnawake by the people of Kahnawake. The name comes from the massive piles of clay and gravel that were dumped on this area of previously fertile farmland in the 1950's, as a result of the excavation of the adjacent Saint Lawrence Seaway.
Expropriated in the 1950's, the land was repatriated to Kahnawake in the early 1980's. Housing development began on the west end of the area in the late 1980's.
