Tehsil Dwarahat, District Almora. Uttrakhand, Bharat.

The coins found here suggest that the first of the people to settle down in Dwarahat, were the Kunindas who dominated the area from 500 BC to 600 AD. They were tribals living in small groups spread over the whole area.

These people were worshippers of Shiva who would make vedic sacrifices to appease the god. However, the rise of Guptas saw the decline of Kunindas who slowly lost their way on the land.

The Guptas contributed much to the history of Dwarahat. Guptas were great builders and under their patronage, art and architectiure prospered. They invited the finest craftsmen to build and adorn this area with numerous temples and fine sculptures. Agriculture was their main occupation and Shiva, the presiding deity. However, unlike the Kunindas, the Guptas also worshipped Vishnu, Surya, Ganesha, Shakti and Kali.

Guptas were followed by the Chands or the Katyuri Dynasty. The Katyuris were part of the Khas tribe that came to India from Central Asia in the first millenium B.C. and spread out far and wide across the entire Kumaon, Garhwal, Khasia hills in Assam, and etcetera.

The Katyuris were powerful, ambitious and organized. They made Dwarahat the capital in the 16th Century and set up a proper system of administration in the area. They made several departments with heads responsible for administering Katyuri authority over the entire kingdom. Thses heads were called the ‘Bhandaris’ or ‘Adhikaris’ or ‘Negis’, etcetera depending on their excat authoratative power.

The Chand kings never set up a standing army. Instead they relied on their 'vassals' in times of internal and external aggression. The kingdom enjoyed a state of peace and as a result, trade and commerce grew rapidly. It was during this time that the Kumaoni language evolved and literature was written in it.

The main ruler of Dwrahat are :

i) Gujjar Dev (1257 AD) is known to have installed an image of Kalika Devi & Shitala Devi,

ii) Sudhar Dev, he built a temple of Badrinath at Dwarahat (as per tradition the present township of Ranikhet (earlier known Ranikshetra) was the pleasure retreat of Padmini (the queen of Sudhar Dev))

iii) Man Dev is known to have gifted a village to Brahman, named Vasu Dev Tripati in 1337 AD.

iv) Som Dev built a naula (water spring) & a Chabutara at Dwarahat 1341 AD), also installed a image of Ganesh at Ganai Chokhutia in 1354 AD

Chands were uprooted by the Gorkhas of Nepal who invaded the region in 1790. They were however, plunderers after the wealth this region had and was capable of generating. They run the administration with extreme ruthlessness and were only interested in curbing any sort of rebellion. This, perhaps, was the darkest period in the history of Dwarahat.

The Gorkha rule did not last long. The year 1814 saw both the British and the Gurkha forces engaged in fierce battle for control over the region. Although, the Gorkhas fought the war with all their might, eventually the British succeeded in overpowering them and Dwarahat like most other parts of the country slipped into the hands of the mighty British Empire.
