Designed by Viennese architect Ignatz Schuhmann and built between 1863-1865. It can accommodate 3000 people. The synagogue was established on the 19th of September 1865 serving the jewish community in Timisoara. Between the World Wars, the city was home to 13000 jews, compared to the 700 living here today. The synagogue was closed towards the end of the communist rule of Romania, as jews established after World War II started fleeing the country. Today, the synagogue is owned by the Jews' Federation of Romania and it was reopened in September 2005.
