The present church building replaces the original St. Joseph Church erected on this site in 1847.

Built in 1886 the church was designed by Joseph Connolly (1840-1905) Irish born architect who specialized in designing church buildings largely for the Catholic Church. Connolly came to Canada in 1873 and over the next 25 years designed or remodeled nearly 40 churches in Ontario. The two bell towers were not completed until 1916.

During the 1990s both the interior and the exterior of the church were extensively renovated. As a result of a 2008 restructuring St Joseph became part of the St. Joseph-St. Ursula Church Cluster.
