Chauragarh temple is a famous pilgrim place situated at an altitude of 1326 metre. The climb that begins 9 kms before Pachmarhi, includes 1300 steep steps that lead to the temple. During Shivratri, most devotees carry the trident on their shoulders and complete the strenuous journey moved only by their faith. "The practice has been going on for hundreds of years," says a fourth generation blacksmith, who make these trishuls. Tridents weighing as much as 151 kgs and 15ft high are made on special orders. "Offering a weapon like trishul is considered auspicious and is like thanksgiving, once the wish has been fulfilled," he adds.
