This small town outside the back gate of Ft. Campbell suffered a gradual decline in activity and population after Ft. Campbell was build in the early 1940s; farmers were bought out and relocated to create the post's large training area, and the major highway through town was cut off, leaving LaFayette an isolated island "off the beaten path." Now home to a mix of rural and military families, LaFayette still has a small store (LaFayette General Store), a small cafe (Judy Kay's), at least two churches (LaFayette Methodist Church and LaFayette Baptist Church), and perhaps 200 residents. Many residents find the lack of new development, the lingering history of the town, and the close proximity to Ft. Campbell appealing. The town looks much as it may have looked in the 1940s and 50s.
