Built in 1887 by the Southern Pacific Railroad as part of a very long railroad bridge spanning the Atchafalaya Basin near Morgan City, Louisiana. It was moved to San Antonio circa 1910 when the line was upgraded. It was modified and used for vehicular traffic to span the Galvestion, Harrisburg and San Antonio (later Southern Pacific, currently Union Pacific) railroad. It was closed in 1982 when deemed structurally unsound. Despite the danger posed by holes in the asphalt and the rotting structure, it continued to be used by non-vehicular traffic. In 2010 it was reopened as a rehabilitated bicycle bridge. Pictures can be seen at bridgehunter.com/tx/bexar/hays-street/.
