Giulio Cesare (Italian for Julius Caesar), motto Caesar Adest was a Conte di Cavour-class battleship that served in the Regia Marina in both World Wars before joining the Soviet Navy as the Novorossiysk. Her keel was laid down on 24 June 1910 at Cantieri Ansaldo, Genoa. She was launched 15 October 1911, and construction was completed 14 May 1914.

On the night of 28 to 29 October 1955 at the mooring barrel number 3 the Black Sea Fleet's flagship battleship "Novorossiisk" exploded and sank. The sinking occurred in 1 hour and 30 minutes.

4 hours and 15 minutes after unsuccessful attempts to save the ship "Novorossiysk" turned keel up. It was raised in May 1957 and cut up for scrap. It was a major disaster in national naval history. According to official figures - from 609 to 657 sailors and officers (various sources), and unofficially - upto 1200 souls were lost. Last knockings on the overturned battleship hull were heard as much as 78 hours after capsize. Dying, the sailors, "Novorossiysk" sang "Varyag".
