Originally called Hay Canyon this canyon was renamed Johnson Canyon after the small Mormon settlement named Johnson was settled by the sons of William Derby Johnson in 1871. Johnson was a settlement of Mormon polygamist. In 1884, the Johnson family, pursued by federal agents and William Derby under indictment for cohabitation, LDS Church President sent word to William Derby Johnson sell his holding. William Derby Johnson would settle a Mormon colony of polygamous called Colonia Diaz, Mexico
