This used to be Penn Fruit, a major supermarket chain. It built stores of this style from 1953 to 1960. This one opened in 1955, and Safeway officials came from California to see it (becoming the inspiration for similar Safeway stores in the West Coast). Penn Fruit sold to Pantry Pride, owned by Food Fair, in 1975-1976. This store closed in 1976, and was replaced by one of the very first Burlington Coat Factory stores in 1977. The building has received a minor expansion.

This was one of the very first Burlington Coat Factory stores in the USA. It opened in 1977 to replace the Penn Fruit supermarket here which had closed in 1976. Most Burlington stores never opened until the 1980s.
