The Palais du Roi de Rome was originally the mansion of the Comte d'Angiviller, erected in 1784 by order of Louis XVI. Napoleon Bonaparte rebuilt it in 1812 as a palace for his baby son, the titular King of Rome. The young heir, nicknamed l'Aiglon (the Eaglet), remained here only until his father's abdication in 1814, living soon thereafter as a virtual prisoner at the Austrian court, where he died of tuberculosis at age 21. The central and main part of the palace no longer exists; what remains today are two side wings separated by a courtyard. In 1989 the city of Rambouillet purchased one of the wings and has since used it for exhibitions.
