Originally settled by Mormons searching for farmland in 1849, the town was soon overrun by gold miners and Chinese immigrants. The town was once the site of the largest Chinese population in Mariposa County.

The placer deposits located in the Mormon Bar mining district, near the headwaters of Mariposa Creek, were six feet thick and mostly played out by the 1870s. A small revival occured in the '30s.

Mormon Bar is California Historical Landmark #323.
