Castle was built at the beginning of 19th century by Joachim Count of Sternberg (1755 - 1808) in empire style. A famous Czech scientist and benefactor Kaspar Maria Count of Sternberg (1761 - 1838), i.a. co-founder of the Museum of Kingdom of Bohemia, lived here. In the castle were assembled valuable botanical and paleontological collections and botany garden was founded here by his worth, too. Sternbergs owned the castle as late as 1939, after 1989 was it restituted back to them. Caspar Maria was buried in the family mausoleum in the Radnice cemetery.
