Honest Ed's Discount Department Store (Toronto, Ontario)

Canada / Ontario / Toronto / Toronto, Ontario
 store / shop, discount store

Honest Ed's is a Toronto landmark, remarkable more for its weird aesthetics than its merchandise.

The store was originally opened in 1948 by local businessman Ed Mirvish. It eventually grew to fill the entire block from Bathurst to Markham Streets, and currently fills two warehouse sized buildings.

The exterior is dominated by huge signs outlined in thousands of flashing lights. The interior is a difficult to navigate maze filled with merchandise and curiosities. The walls are plastered with signed movie posters and hand lettered signs bearing silly slogans ("AT HONEST ED'S, ONLY THE FLOORS ARE CROOKED!").

Comments

  • Honest Ed Mirvish passed away 11/July/2007 at the age of 92. One of the greatest Torontonians ever. Check the Entertainment District at King West and University for his theatres and the Toronto Walk of Fame.
  • As always, caveat emptor. On the other hand, I still have an $11 toaster from Honest Ed's that's held up remarkably well over the past 8 years.
