  • After visiting Versailles Jagatjit Singh had French architect A. Marcel build this replica palace c. 1902. It took seven years to complete. Each of the hundred or so apartments reserved for guests bore the name of a French town or celebrity. The interior decorations were embellished with porcelain based on Sevres models, copies of Gobelins tapestries and Louis XV furniture and Aubusson carpets ordered specially to fit the rooms. In the main gallery a carved ceiling, decorated with a stain-glass panel, was illuminated by small star-shaped lights. French was declared the official court language, and the Prince's children on occasion wore powered wigs, lace ruffles, silk breeches and pumps with buckles. The park, inspired by Le Notre's gardens at Versailles, was maintained by about five hundrfed gardeners.
