Hierapolis - Castabala

Ruins of the Hellenistic and Roman city and medieval castle. The native name was Kastabala, but the settlement acquired the Greek name Hierapolis, "holy city." It served as the capital of the short-lived client kingdom of Castabala in the 1st century BC-1st century AD.

The acropolis is on the site of the ruined castle now known as Bodrum Kalesi. The site also features a theater, a colonnade running along both sides of the main avenue, remains of city walls, an agora, baths, temples, two Christian churches (one outside the walls). Recently (2023) remains of the main temple, to Kubaba (whom the Greeks identified as Artemis) dating to c. 540 BC were identified near the colonnade.
