City with a population of 6,682 at the 2000 census, was an estimated 7,103 in 2009. County seat of Kershaw County.

Originally laid out as part of the township of Fredericksburg by royal ordinance. In 1758 the site of the current town was settled by Joseph Kershaw, namesake of the modern county. It soon came to be named Camden after Lord Camden, Whig politician and jurist who supported colonial rights.
