In 1142 there was founded the Cistercian abbey, the oldest in the Czech lands. The church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in 1282-1320. In April 21st 1421 were the monastery and cathedral succumbed by Hussite attack and burned. For many years were the buildings damaged and waiting for recovery. It was held in the years 1677-1733 under the leadership of famous architect Jan Blasio Santini-Aichl, who applied the new style in the cathedral reconstruction(the so-called Baroque Gothic) which is unique in Europe and combines both styles in a remarkable unity. By Emperor Joseph II (1780-1790) was a Cistercian monastery as well as many others dissoluted in 1783 by his ecclesiastical policy, its seventeenth monks were transferred to other institutions, and the Church was then desecrated and used as temporary storage of flour. The last phase of history began in 1812 when the buildings of monastery were transferred to the tobacco factory.
