Built in 1923
Architect: Robert Frost Daggett
Facts:
-The last major renovation of the club facilities was in 1966 by the Charles C. Brandt Construction Company.
-A proposal by RAB Investments & Eaton Investments to renovate the upper floors of the Indianapolis Athletic Club into luxury condominiums was cancelled in early 2002. As part of the project, the club's athletic and meeting facilities would have been modernized and a new Highrise Boutique Hotel would have been constructed just to the west.
-The Indianapolis Athletic Club was the site of a major fire on February 5, 1992. Two Indianapolis firefighters and one club guest were killed.
-One of two major clubhouse buildings downtown, the Indianapolis Athletic Club was traditionally a seat of Democratic political power, while the Columbia Club Building, 3 blocks south on Monument Circle, catered more to Republicans.
-The 76 hotel rooms on the upper 5 floors are scheduled to be reconfigured into 44 condominiums during 2004-2005. The funds from the sale will be used to renovate the club's common areas.
-The club closed in September 2004, after 80 years of operations. It is unclear if the redevelopment will go through in its present form, or at all.
-Hearthview Residential, LLC purchased the building for $3.2 million in September 2004, planning to proceed with the condominium conversion. There are indications that a club may be maintained on the lower floors, but it will likely be run by a different entity.
-Some media reports indicated the Columbia Club may have been interested in purchasing and renovating the club facilities, as long as a large number of former IAC members agreed to join the Columbia Club.
-No agreement was reached with the Columbia Club by mid-November 2004. Hearthview will now create 78 condominiums in the building and preserve many of the athletic facilities as amenities for the new residents.
-Reconstruction began in December 2004, with initial occupancy in Autumn 2005.
