The Libochovice castle is one of the most outstanding early Baroque buildings in the country. There was originally a Gothic stronghold in this place, rebuilt between 1560 and 1564 into a castle. Contemporary form gets the castle between 1683 and 1690 by the design of Antonius Porta for Gundaker of Lichtenstein in early Baroque style. The original red decoration of the peripheral walls was also restored.
In the interior is the impressive Saturn's Hall, decorated with a mighty fireplace with sculptures of high artistic value and beautiful ceiling. Other rooms reflects the transformations of architectural styles from Baroque to the historical styles of the 19th century. Collection of tapestries, paintings, glass, and china are presented. A permanent exposition of Professor J. E. Purkyně, the prominent Czech physiologist, who was born here in 1787 is in the ground floor.
