Santa Cruz del Sur. Some 16,600 residents in 2007. It is a fishing town that was badly battered by Category 3-hurricane Paloma in Nov. 8-9 2008.
On November 9, 1932 the town was devastated by a gigantic tidal wave developed in front of a category-5 hurricane. Thousands of residents died. Estimates fluctuate from 1,500 to 3,500 dead. It is by large the worse natural disaster in Cuba's history.
