This gate spanned the road to Colchester which was Britains second city under the Romans. The name comes initially from the term Ale-gate which meant it was a public gate and open to everybody. Quite surprisingly a toll was not charged at this gate. As time passed and the gate became a more established the feature the name was slowly changed to Aldgate, meaning the Old Gate.
