Town and seat of a municipality (area: 136 sq.km.; population: 18,500 inhabitants) in Northern Portugal, situated at the mouth of the Minho river, across the Spanish region of Galicia.
Historically it was an important port up to the 17th century (trading with Northern Europa, Brasil, Africa and India) and border fortification (roman and medieval remains in the old town).
Due to its scenic location and pastoral countryside became a center for secondary homes and a summer resort (beaches of Camarido and Moledo; Coura valley; mountain ranges).
Connected to Porto and Vigo by highway and train; cars can be ferried across the border to A Guardia, in Spain.
Interesting old town, with late gothic parish church (late 15th century) and renaissance main square (fountain of 1551).
A ferry boat links the Portuguese and Spanish sides of the river.
