place with historical importance, quarry
McDonald Stone Quarry furnished Ohio's state stone for the Washington Monument. Each state in the union was asked to furnish a piece of native stone. Ohio's was a block of Dayton limestone. The inscription on the block reads: "The State of Ohio / The Memory of Washington / and / The Union of the States / Sunto Perpetus"
Located on the McDonald Farm in Greene County, the quarry operated from 1820 to 1895. Water from a nearby spring eventually flooded the pit.
