Named for William Peace, who contributed eight acres and $10,000 toward the establishment of a Presbyterian school for girls, Peace Institute was chartered in 1857. When the main building was only half-finished, the Confederate Army used it as a hospital. After the war, it housed the Freedmen's Bureau, where freed blacks could get food and health services. During Reconstruction, the founder of Shaw University, Henry Tupper, created a stock corporation to reclaim the land for use as a girls' school. Today the school offers both baccalaureate and associate degrees to women.
