UNESCO World Heritage Site, beguinage
Founded in 1257 as a community for independent religious women. Having survived a fire that leveled most of Tongeren in 1677, the beguinage features some of the oldest buildings in the city. Its layout resembles a miniature village with its own street grid, in contrast to the other typical beguinage plan with a ring of houses around a churchyard.
